Tips & Advice

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in Europe, take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO):

Health and Travel Insurance
When travelling to countries within Europe you should always be sure you have applied for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving. Should you fall ill whilst on holiday, this card will entitle you to basic medical treatment as long as you present it whilst staying in countries within the European Economic Area. However, the card will only entitle you to state provided medical treatment. It is not valid for non-urgent or on-going treatment. Therefore, it is recommended that you always check you have the correct travel insurance which will cover the cost of treatment and repatriation as well should you need it. It is advisable that you have access to additional funds in case you have to pay for treatment whilst you're away.

Crime
As with every country you visit it is important that you always remain alert to the risks of crime. In some European destinations, tourists are seen as easy targets, so where possible keep your valuables in the hotel safe and avoid carrying large quantities of cash.

Always buy your own drinks and never leave them unattended. Alcoholic beverages in foreign countries tend to be much stronger than in the UK, so it is wise to know your limits.

It would also be advisable to check the individual country pages before you leave to get a better idea of crime levels for where you are visiting.

Local Laws and Customs
Countries across Europe will have different laws and customs so it is best to check the individual country before you travel.

Entry Requirements
When British Citizens are travelling to most European Countries, no visa is needed for entry, however when entering Turkey you will need one. Therefore, it is best to check each individual country before travelling.

Passport validity also varies and some countries require a period of validity beyond the date you leave so it is best to check if this applies to the country you are visiting.

Any other nationality looking to visit countries in Europe must contact their local embassy to check visa and passport requirements.

Europe is the second smallest continent in the world and consists of just 4 million square miles.
