Audience Suitability:
There are a variety of themes that are explored throughout Les Miserables, although implicit, some may feel that this is not suitable for a young audience. The show contains very few swear words, no nudity, a kiss between two of the leading characters and some scenes of death but nothing that is graphic. It is really down to the parents to consider whether this show is suitable for their children or not.

Les Miserables is a rather depressing tale to tell set against the backdrop of France in the 19th Century during the build-up to the French Revolution. Follow in the footsteps of the show's main character, Jean Valjean, an ex-convict, who after serving 19 years for committing a small crime of stealing food to feed his starving family is finally released on parole and decides to start his life again, assuming a new identity as Monsieur Madeleine.
Unfortunately though for decades he is hunted by a ruthless policeman called Javert who is determined to punish Jean Valjean for his crimes. Jean Valjean finds faith in religion and transforms into a new man opening a factory. Chaotic scenes in the factory lead to one of the girls, Fantine, being thrown out onto the streets unable to provide for her daughter who is being cared for by the Innkeeper and his wife. Unbeknown to Jean Valjean he will come across factory worker Fantine again in the most desperate of circumstances where he agrees to take care of her daughter Cosette.
Les Miserables the Musical opened on Broadway in March 1987 and became the fourth longest-running show in theatre history and went on to win eight Tony® Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score. In 1985, Les Miserables was nominated for three Laurence Olivier Awards where it won one for Best Actress In A Musical and was awarded to Patti LuPone. In 2012, the show won another Olivier Award, this time the Audience Award for Most Popular Show.
Although containing many unhappy themes, the musical Les Misérables is ultimately a story representing the power of the human spirit and takes the audience on a journey of broken dreams and unrequited love leading to redemption and paying the ultimate sacrifice for the ones you care for the most.
