Formula 1 – The British Grand Prix

Formula 1 – The British Grand PrixA thrilling weekend
Nothing beats watching a Formula One Grand Prix live. See the drama - and downforce in action at the best-attended annual sporting event in the UK. Last year, Silverstone was the second-biggest Grand Prix attendance ever!

The British Grand Prix weekend takes place across three days. You’ll see the teams, including Ferrari and McLaren, practice before going head-to-head in a qualifying session to settle the final grid (10 teams, 20 drivers and 20 cars). Past drivers have included champions like Lewis Hamilton, who shares the overall record of seven titles with Michael Schumacher.

The final day is the race itself, where the three highest-placed drivers will be awarded a spot on the podium – earning points towards the 2024 World Championship. World Champions Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso are all confirmed to be racing at Silverstone in 2024!

Part of the F1 World Championship
24 Grand Prix races in 21 countries. The most prestigious motor racing competition in the world runs from March to December every year. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to each of the Formula One World Championship races to experience the action in person - with millions watching from home.

Silverstone looked a little different in 1948
The first British Grand Prix race was held at RAF Silverstone in 1948 after Britain’s main race tracks were left damaged beyond repair after World War II – it was marked by hay bales, ropes and canvas barriers! 100,000 people flocked to see Luigi Villoresi beat 24 others in his Maserati.

The Silverstone motor racing circuit is one of four that have been featured on the world F1 calendar ever since.

Flag Guide

Green flag | Formula 1
The GREEN FLAG means that the track is free. The flag is waved by the starter signaling the start to the warm-up lap.

Yellow flag | Formula 1
The YELLOW FLAG indicates a danger on the track, usually an accident. If the marshal just shows the flag, overtaking is forbidden. However, if the marshal waves the flag, it means that the driver must slow down and be ready to stop immediately.

Red flag | Formula 1
RED FLAG means immediate stopping of a race, qualification, or training. It usually is waved because a car is lying in a dangerous position after an accident or because conditions are too poor for racing to be safe. When the red flag appears, all drivers must slow down immediately and enter the pits.

Blue flag | Formula 1
A BLUE FLAG is waved to a slower car that is close to being overtaken by a faster car. The first of these must then allow for faster overtaking at the earliest opportunity.

Yellow flag with red stripes | Formula 1
A YELLOW FLAG WITH RED STRIPES warns competitors of reduced track grip (due to water, oil, clay, gravel, etc.).

Check flag | Formula 1
CHECK FLAG signals the end of a race or qualification.

White flag | Formula 1
The WHITE FLAG signals a slow-moving vehicle on the track (ambulance or tow truck).

Black flag with orange circle | Formula 1
A BLACK FLAG WITH ORANGE CIRCLE and car number is used to inform that his car has mechanical problems and must leave the track immediately and go to the pits.

Black flag | Formula 1
The BLACK FLAG together with the drivers number means that he must leave the track and go to the pits immediately, due to disqualification from the race.

The Vale Grandstand, Silverstone

On Sunday, you'll have an allocated Vale Grandstand seat. Read on to find out more...

One of the best views of the British Grand Prix

One of the biggest grandstands at the Silverstone circuit, the Vale Grandstand is full of spectators and no dress code - giving it a buzzing and relaxed atmosphere, as well as one of the best views of the action!

You’ll see first-hand any moves that are made
This is because Vale Corner is known as one of the best overtaking spots on the circuit, so you’ll be the first to see any moves that are made. You’ll also get to see the F1 cars coming around Stowe at high speed, their downforce pinning them to the track.

What do you need to bring with you?
Vale Grandstand is not covered, so come prepared with the essentials to withstand the elements: sun protection and a refillable water bottle (drinking water taps are available at the toilet areas). There are several giant TV screens visible from here, but bring binoculars if you wish!
